The red pill (the other end)

When we spend time monitoring AI, we often see a phrase from The Matrix pop up: it's redpiled. It has been used by many over the years, including a very nasty version that defines people who feel racist, misogynistic and proud at the same time, but it means in the AI world what the work of the Wachowski sisters always wanted to say: if you open your eyes the red pill.

Recently, the most red-faced person from AI is Jana Dogan, who holds the top AI engineering position at Google. It's not perfect, she moderated, but it's good enough to end with advice: Ask an expert to build something for you to understand how useful clod can be.

In my case, I am not an AI engineer and only have basic knowledge of coding, my red pill moment was when I realized that I could also create digital tools to solve my problems and meet my needs. The cloud has unlocked some potential for me, making my work and some personal activities more efficient. Before Cloud, almost none of my ideas made it past the specification stage.Since Cloud, each thought has lasted less than an hour.In 2026 I was able to use a few small developments organized by Cloud that worked for me every day.I even deployed an iOS app called NearCharge that I developed with a friend and we continue to update and improve the app.

But the most important point remains when you take that famous red pill.In the following paragraphs, I will show you how to create something useful with AI without spending a penny.

This article is taken from the Always Plus newsletter: don't let the future be written without you, sign up!

How to create something with Claude

First of all, this is probably the most difficult part, you need an idea.To find, make a list of things that pass time in your life, on the Internet, and you really do not like to do.There is a small problem that you want to solve.I'll give you one of mine so you understand: every month, I have to open 20 tabs, copy each URL into a spreadsheet box and each page title into the box next to it.Sick, boring and the solutions available to automate this task are too complicated, cumbersome or not very useful for me.So I created an extension that, with one click, can do this specific small task for me.This person on LinkedIn created a small site that informs you when the mountains are visible from Seattle.

Any ideas? If not, here's one for your first try: create a small Chrome extension (or browser of your choice) that makes the news appear on the first page as you read it.In this way, every time you return to the page, you will know with just one click what you still need to read.

To design, first go to Claude.ai and create a free account.Don't pay immediately, I tested the whole process, a free account allows you to do everything.

Then, talk to Claude in the simplest and easiest way by asking him what you want to do.Your first task should be simple (one task) and very visible that you can try to see if it works as you expect.

This is mine:

I would like you to code a small chrome plugin for me.

- Active only at

- Every time I read an article and go to the home page, it says that the article has already been read by applying a "gray level" filter to the image and changing the title to gray instead of black.

I've attached a screenshot because Cloud actually understands the image you sent him - remember that, it'll come later.Within minutes, the extension is almost ready: Cloud has created 3 artifacts that contain most of the code.If you have time, take a few minutes to read this code, which is usually well commented (in French) at the moment when, in addition to creating something new, you also learn.

How do you test your extension?Claude has given you a short and comprehensive list of activities.Just download each generated file, put them in a folder and rename them as Claude told you.In this case: manifest.json, content.js and style.css.Optionally, you can add 3 icons for your extension in transparent PNG format.Claude gives you the right size.

If you can't do something, ask the AI!Even very silly things. For example, I didn't know whether to put the icons in a subfolder or not: instead of testing, I asked and the answer was clear. In the end, you should have these files in the folder:

Now just enter chrome://extensions/ in the address bar of the Chrome browser and activate the developer mode in the upper right corner.Drag the entire folder (not every file) onto the screen and your extension will be installed and activated. You can also click the "Load unzipped extension" button in the upper left corner and select your folder. Now you can see your extension in Chrome: it's time to test it!

You are entering the debugging phase. It is possible that everything will work the first time (once), or you will have to repeat it. The first version Claude released for this test extension only worked on highlighted articles on the Numerama home page. The easiest way to fix this is to send Claude a screenshot and a brief description of the error.

For each patch, simply copy and paste the code on the right into your content.js file (open them with TextEdit or Notepad) and on the Chrome Extensions interface, click the small circle arrow to update the extension.

Claude went too far in his second iteration (the entire article was grayed out), but after one last try, the plugin started working as I imagined: the articles I spent more than 5 seconds on were grayed out!

The time to create, test and debug this extension is less than the time spent writing this newsletter. In the end, I did not change my life with this product, but I was able to create something that was completely inaccessible to me once. It is possible for you to break this mental barrier and set yourself small challenges, which will gradually improve your daily life. After an extension, why not create a web page or an application. This, in my opinion, is one of the revolutions of generative AI: the web has made knowledge available to everyone, and AGISome barriers to creativity have been removed. Knowing how to code tools for Cloud or your chosen AI won't make you a developer or engineer, but you'll certainly be free.
